January 27: Photographer Chuck Johnson captured this unique photograph of a 2-stage Terrier-Black Brant IX rocket launch at the Poker Flat Research Range. The rocket flew 385 kilometers high through the aurora to obtain measurements that will help scientists understand the structure and characteristics of high-frequency waves and turbulence created by the aurora.

Location: Cleary Summit, 20 miles northeast of Fairbanks, Alaska
Time: 10:50 pm on January 27
Camera: Olympus digital C3040, f1.8, 400 ISO 16 sec. exposure
